Rock slope failure preparation paced by total crack boundary length

چکیده

Abstract Gravitational mass wasting prediction requires understanding of the factors controlling failure. Prior to slope failure, cracks in weakened rock are thought grow and coalesce, eventually forming a continuous failure plane. Here, we apply hidden Markov machine learning model seismic data, revealing temporal evolution prior major rockslide event Swiss Alps. After prolonged linear increase crack cumulative number, an S-shaped rate pattern occurred day before rockslide. A simple mechanistic can explain this behaviour, showing that total boundary length is key factor plane immediately movement. Our findings imply should be treated as 2-D, rather than 1-D objects, driven predominantly by internal external processes. offers novel, physically based approach for early warning failures.

Boundary Labelling of Optimal Total Leader Length

In this paper, we consider the leader length minimization problem for boundary labelling, i.e. the problem of finding a legal leaderlabel placement, such that the total leader length is minimized. We present an O(nlogn) algorithm assuming type-opo leaders (rectilinear lines with either zero or two bends) and labels of uniform size which can be attached to all four sides of rectangle R. Our algo...

Fractal rock slope dynamics anticipating a collapse.

Time series of dilatometric measurements of relative displacements on rock cracks on stable and unstable sandstone slopes were analyzed. The inherent dynamics of rock slopes lack any significant nonlinearity. However, the residuals obtained by removing meteorological influences are fat-tailed non-Gaussian fluctuations, with short-range correlations in the case of stable slopes. The fluctuations...

System reliability approach to rock slope stability

A systematic quantitative methodology for the reliability analysis of stability of rock slopes is presented. A sliding mass resting on an inclined plane and composed of two blocks separated by a vertical tension crack is considered, and a disjoint cut-set system formulation is proposed, with each cut-set corresponding to a different failure mode of the slope. Methods for the evaluation of the s...

Back analyses for slope failures in rock

Some of the geotechnical parameters used in the analysis may not be accurately measured directly from laboratory tests due to effects of sample disturbance and errors of tests. The back analysis or the observational method are thus often applied to determine the representative and/or dominant strength parameters based on field observations in practice. Based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion,...

A boundary element analysis of crack-propagation mechanism of micro-cracks in rock-like specimens under a uniform normal tension

In this work, the mechanism for fracture of brittle substances such as rocks under a uniform normal tension is considered. The oriented straight micro-cracks are mostly created in all the polycrystalline materials resulting from the stress concentrations. The present work focuses on the interactions of the pre-existing micro-cracks, which can grow and propagate within a rock-like specimen. The ...
